The EFR was founded in May 2003 by Viennese surgeon Prof. Béla Teleky, MD in an effort to provide an interdisciplinary scientific platform on colorectal cancer.The main focus of the first meeting was on presenting the purposes and activities as well as the organisation and structure of this newly founded association, with the specific aim of providing international groups of experts with a common forum for scientific exchange.
Lectures were given by participants from eight different countries and several discussion sessions were held afterwards, looking closely at the current state of research into colorectal surgery and oncological care.
